Older Individuals Who Are Blind

The Older Individuals who are Blind (OIB) Program provides services to visually impaired individuals, age 55 and older, to assist them to live independently in California. The OIB program seeks to stimulate independent living, empowerment and full inclusion of older individuals who are blind or visually impaired, as well as providing training and skill building for professionals and consumers serving the older blind population. It also seeks to reach out to expand and enhance services in rural and other unserved and underserved areas.

DOR awards grant funding to organizations across the State who serve the 55 and older population with visual impairments. These partner organizations provide a wide variety of services to consumers in their designated area of the State.

Services provided by partner organizations may include: Orientation & Mobility, Adaptive Equipment/Assistive Technology, Transportation, Activities of Daily Living or Independent Living Skills, Adjustment Counseling, Self-Advocacy, Low Vision Training, and other needed services to enhance participation in and integration with the larger community.
